Publication Anterior Neck Lipoma with Anterior Mediastinal Extention – A Rare Case Report(Kathmandu University, 2013) Sharma, BK; Khanna, SK; Bharati, M; Gupta, AABSTRACT Lipomas are the most common benign mesenchymal tumour. Thirteen percent of lipomas are seen in head and neck region. Anterior neck lipoma is a rare one. Anterior neck lipoma with mediastinal extension is extremely rare. We are presenting a case of 52 years old male reported to Central Referral Hospital, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Gangtok, Sikkim with complains of swelling in left side of neck for last 18 months along with occasional history of dyspnoea. Physical examination, ultrasound, computed tomography and fine needle aspiration cytology are in favor of lipoma. Due to its location up to the anterior mediastinum, the surgery could not be done in this hospital and patient was referred to higher center having cardio- thoracic surgical back up. This causes concern for the treating surgeon and may result in laparotomies uncalled for. We present two cases of Chilaiditi’s Syndrome out of which one had an interposed small bowel loop and was operated upon after making a diagnosis of perforation peritonitis. Other was associated with sigmoid volvulus and was managed conservatively. Review of literature regarding aetiology and associated causes has been done in this study. To maintain harmony of the occlusal condition, the posterior teeth must pass close to but not contact their opposing teeth during mandibular movement. Anterior guidance is essential to a harmonious functional relationship in the masticatory system. Objective The objective of this study was to find out the frequency of pattern of occlusal contacts in lateral position and to compare the accuracy of shim-stock and articulating paper. Method This study was conducted in the Department of Prosthodontics, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences. The study consisted of 80 healthy subjects between the age group of 18-30 years. They were selected randomly from undergraduate students and dental hygienist of college of dental science and written consent was taken. This age was selected because of minimal occlusal wear. Results In the present study with 80 participants the majority of the contact patterns with shimstock on the working side were group function( 84%), the canine protected occlusal patterns were found to be 12% and the unclassifiable pattern were found to be 4%. On the otherhand, the data with articulating paper were group function type (94%), the canine protected occlusal patterns as 2.5% and the unclassifiable pattern were found to be 3.5%. In this study, with shim stock, the majority of the contact patterns were group function being 84% whereas with the articulating paper it was 94%. When shim stock occlusal strip (12 μm thick) was compared to commonly used articulating paper (40 μm), the excessive thickness of articulating paper that exceed the maximum recommended thickness of occlusal recording strips markedly must have given much more false contacts. Conclusion It was concluded that the majority of the contact pattern were group function being 84% with shim stock and 94% with articulating paper. Also shim stock exhibits superior accuracy and reliability. There is no State or Centre funded programs for prevention of dental diseases in India. The present review enlists the targeted prevention of dental caries in permanent teeth of 6 to 16 years old children presenting for dental care. Proper nutrition for children is very important. The most commonly used index of obesity and over weight is Body Mass Index. The growth of children should be monitored using the Body Mass Index (BMI) and risk factors assessed through a dietary and physical activity history. The increase in obesity is attributed to increased carbohydrate consumption among children. Obesity and caries are both diet-based conditions that share a cause that is, excessive ingestion of fermentable carbohydrates. Objective This study was undertaken to determine the association of nutritional status with dental caries in 8 to 12 year old children of Udaipur city. Method The present study was conducted on a random sample of 1000 boys and girls, aged 8-12 years. The children were selected from schools located in the Udaipur City, Rajasthan. The schools examined were of government and private sector schools in Udaipur city. The children from schools of Udaipur city was taken in the study with male, female and age group ratio as per distribution in population. A proforma was used to record children’s age, gender, school, year, height, weight, parental income and dental caries status. Statistical analysis was done using Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS Version 15; Chicago Inc., USA). Result It was found that caries free individuals were more from normal nutritional status group with 134 (13.4 %) subjects where as only 11 (1.1 %) of subjects obese children were found caries free. Conclusion Study shows that the children with normal BMI for age had more caries in their primary teeth, as well as in their permanent teeth, than the overweight children.
