A Neonate with Retroperitoneal Mature Cystic Teratoma – A Case Report
(Nepal Paediatric Society (JNPS), 2022) Joshi, Jayateertha; Mushtaq, Owais Ahmed; Sayashi Roy,; Rao, Suchetha S.
Abstract: Retroperitoneal teratoma is a rare occurrence in neonates. They are usually asymptomatic and the only finding may be abdominal distension. We report an unusual case of a large retroperitoneal teratoma in a neonate who presented with abdominal distension. Imaging done showed a cystic lesion with calcifications, internal septations and fat dense areas. It was successfully managed by surgical excision, findings of which were consistent with that of a mature cystic teratoma. Despite being rare, we must consider retroperitoneal teratomas as a differential diagnosis of an abdominal mass in a newborn. Early detection and complete surgical excision may be life-saving.

Antenatal Ovarian Torsion Presenting With Features of Intestinal Obstruction in a Neonate
(Nepal Paediatric Society (JNPS), 2020) Joshi, Jayateertha; Kamath, Nutan; Kini, Jyoti Ramnath; K, Jayashree; Rao, Suchetha; Kamath, Sowmini P
Abstract: With the advent of antenatal ultrasonography (USG), detection of neonatal intra-abdominal cystic lesions is on the rise. We present a neonate who was detected antenatally to have a cystic lesion per abdomen and presented with features of intestinal obstruction on first postnatal day. Emergency exploratory laparotomy revealed a left torsed ovarian cyst compressing the ileoceacal junction. Left oophorectomy was done and ovarian torsion was confirmed by histopathology examination. The USG abdomen at six months follow up showed a well visualised right ovary.
