Publication Dementia Symptoms among Senior Citizens Living in Geriatric Homes of Kathmandu Valley(Kathmandu University, 2021) Singh, DR; Parajuli, P; Hug, J; Nath, D; Koirala, R; Mandal, RABSTRACT Background With increasing age, the older population becomes more susceptible to mental disorders. It is important to recognize and develop an understanding of psychiatric morbidity particularly among the residents of geriatric homes in resource-poor settings. Objective To assess the prevalence and associated factors of dementia symptoms among Nepalese senior citizens living in geriatric homes of Kathmandu valley. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted among 304 senior citizens living in geriatric homes of Kathmandu valley. Cognitive Impairment Test (CIT), was used to assess dementia symptoms. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed. All the variables that were significant at p < 0.05 level in the bivariate analysis were included in the multivariate regression model and statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05 with a 95.00% confidence interval (CI). Result This study showed 75.65%, of the participants, had dementia symptoms. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, female respondents (AOR=2.94, 95% CI=1.31-6.57), respondents never received geriatric allowances (AOR=2.46, 95% CI=1.22-4.98), respondent’s history of alcohol consumption habits (AOR=2.04, 95% CI=1.01-4.11) and non-vegetarian diet habits (AOR= 2.31, 95% CI=1.12-4.76) were found more likely to had higher dementia symptoms whereas, literate participants (AOR=0.19, 95% CI=0.08-0.43) were less likely to had dementia symptoms. Conclusion The high prevalence of dementia symptoms among senior citizens living in geriatric homes in the Kathmandu valley indicates an urgent need for early diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders among senior citizens to improve their quality of life and well-being. This study aims to assess the financial status of medical students at IOM to test the accuracy of that assumption. Methods: The study was conducted among 24th and 25th batch of students of IOM using pre-formed questionnaire. Results: The majority of students studying in IOM thought they have average to strong financial status and they felt little to no financial stress. Conclusion: Students from low income families are underrepresented in IOM. Data on the type and burden of neurological cases either in the outpatient and inpatient settings in our country are not available. This research has been done to perform a descriptive analysis of the spectrum of neurological cases which were admitted over a period of one fiscal year in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. Methods: This retrospective study included all patients who were admitted with any neurological complaints over a period of one fiscal year (Shrawan 2067 B.S. to Asar 2068 B.S.) Results: The total number of patients admitted was 1165. Out of these, 693 cases were due to neurological disorders (59.48%). The most common disorders were stroke, seizure disorder and central nervous system infections. Conclusion: A variety of neurological disorders, from very common to very rare, were admitted. Various prognostic indices derived from clinical features or patient characteristics and ancillary tests have been used to predict the prognosis of patients with acute ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to find out the significance of the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score on admission in predicting the prognosis of patients with acute ischemic stroke. Method: This is a prospective observational study done in a tertiary care hospital with two hundred patients with acute ischemic stroke Result: Themean NIHSS score in patients with better outcome was 4.6 (± 2.2) and the mean NIHSS score in patients with poor outcome was 14.16(± 7.96). The difference was statistically significant (p=0.000). Conclusion: The baseline neurological status as measured by the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale score predicts the functional status at one month after acute ischemic stroke.
