Abstract

Abstract: Introduction: Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of neonatal deaths worldwide. The prevalence is highest in low - and middle - income countries. Without a significant reduction in neonatal sepsis, it will be impossible to achieve the 2030 sustainable development goal 3. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence and associated factors of neonatal sepsis among neonates. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 361 participants from March 1 to May 30, 2022. A pre-tested questionnaire and check list were used to collect the data. Binary logistic regression analyses were employed to identify the factors associated with neonatal sepsis. P < 0.05 with a 95% CI was considered statistically significant. Results: The overall prevalence of neonatal sepsis among neonates was 46.5%. Primipara [AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.1, 2.9], history of premature rupture of foetal membranes [AOR = 4.0; 95% CI: 2.3, 5.8], chorioamnionitis [AOR = 3.4; 95% CI: 1.5, 7.6], neonatal age 8 – 28 days old [AOR = 6.5; 95% CI: 2.9, 14.6] and birth asphyxia [AOR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.1, 3.0] were significantly associated with neonatal sepsis. Conclusion: Neonatal sepsis is still prevalent in the study setting. Therefore, the Zonal Health Department and other concerned bodies should design appropriate intervention measures to eliminate risk factors for this condition.
